Value of Cross-Team Connections
·OnlineOnlineTechnical writers are often described as the people who "know everything about everything" — they connect teams, detect gaps, and add value far beyond the documentation itself. But docs teams don’t achieve greatness alone. In this meetup, we'll discuss relationships between docs teams and other teams in the company. How do these relationships develop, and how are they mutually beneficial?
- What teams in your company does the docs team have the closest working relationships with? How did those relationships develop?
- Docs and Support:
- How has documentation helped your support team? By reducing ticket volume, or speeding up issue resolution, or something else? How did that come about?
- How has your support team helped documentation? Has feedback gathered by your support team ever informed your documentation priorities? How did that come about?
- Docs and Sales:
- How has documentation helped your sales team? Have you played a role in moving prospects through the sales funnel or helped trial users get to proficiency on their own? Can you put a finer point on what made the difference?
- How has your sales team helped documentation? Sales teams hear a lot of the same questions over and over. Have you ever tapped into that as a signal for what to document, or what to make more visible?
- Beyond the teams we've discussed: What relationships — with marketing, QA, product, customer success, legal, or others — have surprised you with their value? What did those exchanges look like?
- Have you ever collaborated across multiple teams to solve a problem that none of them could have solved alone? What was the trigger, and how did it come together?
- Have you ever had to build a relationship with another team from scratch, where none existed before? What was your approach?
- What does the other team need to understand about docs for the relationship to work? What do you need to understand about them?
- When these cross-team relationships break down, what's usually the cause?
