Summer Shorts

Details

In honour of the hottest June in Ireland for a decade, Xcake has decided to wear shorts for the July event - Short Talks that is (reader must insert own chuckle here).

Thanks a million to Gavan Drohan (http://twitter.com/gavan) at Wayra Ireland (http://twitter.com/wayrairl) for offering us space for this session. Do consider this accelerator for your next startup :)

Update: to get to the venue you go through the O2/Telefonica entrance, and tell security you are there for Wayra. It's hosted on the second floor.

As a result of the venue change, we're going to gather for the traditional post-meetup gossip and jabbering session at The Ferryman (http://www.theferryman.ie/) pub, just metres away from the venue.

Extensions - Creating a Today Widget

Extensions are iOS8's way of opening up the platform in a way that is safe and, we hope, sensible. Extensions come in a number of forms, including custom keyboards, and this evening the artful Karl Monaghan (http://twitter.com/karlmonaghan) brings us the gen on how to create a Today extension for iOS8, based on his CBPExtensionExample (https://github.com/kmonaghan/CBPExtensionExample) code.

Autolayout - How Does It Work?

Books have been written on this topic, one which has plagued developerkind for an age. Apple has been strongly hinting that mastery of the fluid framework of autolayout is going to be a vital skill when developing for future iOS devices, so it's something that every developer needs to know. Why then is it the topic of a short talk? Well - the secret is that we have in the pipeline a full-on XcakeLabs (http://twitter.com/xcakelabs) session on autolayout, but since the topic is so diverse, we're asking the community for guidance on where we should focus the tutorial. The inestimably proficient Jason Connery (http://twitter.com/jasonconnery) will perform a short introduction to the topic, and layout the options. Bring your favourite autolayout issues for mention.

Amazon Mobile Push - Moar™ DIY Options

In August 2013, Amazon announced (https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2013/08/13/amazon-sns-announces-mobile-push/) their mobile push platform, based off their Simple Notification Service (SNS). This platform supports the expected APNS and GCM push services, as well as Amazon Device Messaging, Windows Push Notification Services, Microsoft Push Notification Service for Windows Phone and Baidu Cloud Push. The actually quite modest organizer Oisín Hurley (http://twitter.com/oisin) will present a short talk on adventures with the service.
