Jura Ridgeway Stage 4 - Allerheiligenberg to Balsthal (PROVISIONAL)

Day number 4................

Hike Info

Start - Allerheiligenberg 09:30am (or Hauenstein if we finished there after stage 3)
Finish - Balsthal 15:30 - 17:00
Distance - 15km (poss around 20km if we start at Hauenstein)
Total time -Approx 5 - 6.5 hours depending on starting point (not allowing for breaks and subject to change due to the pace of the group)
Ascent - 490m
Descent - 910m

Brief Description
Day 4 of the Jura Ridgeway. Depending on the finish point of stage 3 we will either start from Hauenstein or Allerheilgenberg. Total walk time will be between 5 and 6.5 hours. From Wuesthöchli we descend down to Asp and then have a small climb up to Schlosshöchi. We then carry walking along the ridgeway with good views including a ruined castle. We carry on to Roggenflue and then take the long the descent down to Balsthal There is a train station at Balsthal with regular connections to Zurich via Oensingen.

The train schedule is as follows:

Depart: Zürich HB 08:04am - ICN 512
Arrive: Olten 08:39am

Depart Olten 08;48am Bus 505
Arrive Hägendorf 09:01am

Depart Hägendorf 09:20am Bus 555
Arrive Allerheiligenberg 09:30am

Travel time: 1 hour 30 mins

Please note that we will meet in Zurich HB under the big colourful angel at 7:45am. If you are running late and miss us, please go directly to the train and try to find us. If your coming from elsewhere, you can also meet us on the train or at Olten Bahnhof at 08:40am. Those who are planning on doing this please let me know so we are not waiting for you in Zurich.

Tickets - I have a GA so I do not need to purchase a ticket however for those who need to purchase tickets on the day, I believe there is a cheaper group option though I am not sure on the details of how many people are needed to qualify for a group discount. Maybe someone can enlighten me! For the moment I would advise that if we arrive at the meeting point on time then this should allow for us to sort it out then. For further hikes I'm sure we can plan ahead much better!! Apologies for my ignorance on the matter!

Recommended to bring along:

• sun/wind/rain protection (wind jacket,sun cream, glasses, hat etc)
• hiking boots recommended
• lunch (sandwich, chocolate etc.)
• water (at least 1 litre )
• basic first aid kit (I will be carrying one but it is always useful to have extra)
• maps of the area are also useful to bring if you have them
• camera
• a cheerful disposition and plenty of enthusiasm!

• be it before the event
• on the day of the event before the agreed start time
• or during the hike itself

In the event of a cancellation I will try to give as much notice as I can but please check the site the morning of the hike BEFORE you leave home. Weather conditions can change quickly and the decision to cancel may be sudden.

Each participant is responsible to ensure they have adequate health insurance and any other insurances that may be required

Whilst all care will be taken to keep the group together it may at times become necessary to split up due to pace, safety, or if someone needs to retire from the hike due to medical reasons.
