Meet & Greet / Tornado Relief Party

The organizers and I have been talking for a while about how we need to post more social events to the calendar. The part of A.O.K. that makes us difference from other volunteer organizations is that we are a Meetup. A platform based on folks meeting, connecting and building relationships within the community. However sometimes that is difficult to do in our group when we are all so busy helping out with a project.

Like many, I was struck this morning waking up and seeing the images on the news out of Oklahoma. I can't imagine losing everything, but knowing at the same time, that I was lucky to be one of the few that didn't lose life as well. After listening to countless interviews, I had to turn it off, but the thoughts of wanting to help have lingered all day.

With all of that said, I would like to invite you to my home this Sunday for a relief party. Come out and meet some of the other fabulous members of the group in a low-key, fun, social setting where we can get to know each other a little better. I will provide all food (of course feel free to bring anything that you may like) and will provide enough water for all (please bring your own drink if you would like something outside of water {alcohol is welcome, but I prefer no glass bottles around the pool}). We will be making some hamburgers/hotdog's and sides, the traditional summer party staples. We will set up a tent in the backyard so you will not be in the direct sunlight if you prefer not to be.

I have a somewhat large backyard for Las Vegas and I anticipate spending most of our time there, however, the house will be open as well for those of you that may find it to warm outside. Bring your bathing suit if you would like to get in the pool, I know I will take a dip or two!

So how does this help the tornado victims? I will provide everything needed to have a nice afternoon and all I ask is that you make a small donation when you arrive. I would rather not collect your cash, but I can if needed. Instead, bring your debit card and we will have a laptop set up at the door for you to make your online donation to the Red Cross. This donation can be as small as a dollar, or larger if you would like. Of course, donating is easy to do without coming to a get together to do so, however, why not do it with a group of like minded people while having a good time instead? I would also like to keep track of donations as its fun to see the impact a group can have together.

Come for a couple minutes or come for the whole afternoon, it's up to you, but I hope you will stay long enough to make a new friend or catch up with an old one.

Dependent on the number of folks interested, we may put some more games/activities together. Also, may limit number of people if the amount rises higher than we can handle.
