The first cases of what would later become known as AIDS were reported in the United States in 1981. The history of HIV/AIDS is a short one and yet since it was reported, just over thirty years ago, it has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. From the moment scientists identified the disease, social responses of fear, denial, stigma and discrimination have accompanied the epidemic.
Founded in 1984, Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) is the oldest and largest AIDS service organization in the state of Nevada. AFAN provides support and advocacy for adults & children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. AFAN works to reduce HIV infection through prevention education to eliminate fear, prejudice and the stigma associated with the disease.

The fun and energy at these yearly walks are amazing! Everyone knows they are doing something good and worthwhile by just being there. It's a feeling of camaraderie and solidarity you just can't pass up. AFAN, has led the AIDS Walk for over twenty years, this year will mark year ten for the A.O.K. team, TEAM WINOS.
Please join us as we proudly walk once again in support of the men, women and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS while honoring the memories of those we have loved and lost.
Team Winos, has been featured the past several years in various local magazines. We've been awarded and recognized by AFAN as, "Most Creative Team" and "Top Fundraising Team." Through individual sponsorship and fundraisers we've raised over $100,000 that goes directly to help those in our community. Our creativity happens with our yearly theme, this year we are possessing extraordinary powers and arriving at the walk as Super Heroes. Cape is not required, it's just fun!
The lovely enjoyable walk is approximately 2 miles on the campus of UNLV. This is a very family friendly day, with great entertainment through out the morning. There is no registration fee, but of course I encourage everyone on our team to help raise funds for this wonderful charity.
