Yates Mill hike/Lake Wheeler kayak

We'll hike the trails of Yates Mill for about an hour, then drive 2 miles south on Lake Wheeler Road to Lake Wheeler Park (6404 Lake Wheeler Road). There you can rent single or double kayaks or canoes for $5 per hour. If you bring your own kayak the launch fee is $4 per day for Raleigh residents, $6 per day for non residents and $2 per day for seniors (age 62 and up) or veterans. You will need to leave your driver's license at the rental window. This is an excellent lake for beginning kayakers but enjoyable for all. There are lots of birds including great blue herons, green herons, egrets, occasional eagle sitings. If you are not hiking but plan to join us for the kayaking part, please put that in the comments. We should reach the boathouse around 9:45. Wear sunscreen and bring water. I will send contact info the evening before.
