Agile Testing Meetup - First Meeting

Skills Matter (map)

Selected By: Nathan Bain

Hello Agile Testing Meetup members,

I am pleased to announce our first group meetup will be taking place on 3rd December 2009 at 6.30pm, and is kindly being hosted by SkillsMatter in Sekforde Street.

The event will feature live demonstration and getting started guide of one or more Agile Testing tools, and everyone will have a chance to ask and answer questions on Agile Testing tools and practices.

We will also be discussing hot topics of the Agile Testing community, and hopefully finding solutions to each others problems and offering advice on good Agile Testing practices.

Please note, that if you want to attend the meetup, you will need to sign-up via the Skillsmatter page for this event, which can be found at http://skillsmatter.c...

Look forward to seeing you all at the meetup!

    Hi All,

The meetup will start in the SkillsMatter offices at about 6:30. We will start with a presentation of some testing technology, lasting for about 45 mins, then it would be cool to have some Q&A of whatever is on anybody's mind with regards to testing methods, tools, technologies etc. Whenever we feel we have done enough of this, the group will move to the local pub (1 min walk) for a more informal discussion session.

Since this is our first meetup, everything is subject to change :)

If this Meetup group gave a better indication of what technologies were going to be covered at the meeting, I'd be inclined to come along, but it's too vague. I'm not going to waste money on a train fare to find out after the fact you're going to be talking only about .NET or RoR. Testing only say. Be more specific and I can make a more informed decision.

    Hi Jeremy,

Good point - I will try to clarify the purpose of the group and how I hope intend the evening to go.

Basically, we are not constrained to any one technology or platform. The idea is that as a group, we discuss different tools and techniques towards agile testing - therefore the group will decide what we are going to be discussing.

Tomorrow, I will be talking about developing a simple keyword testing framework with FitNesse and WebDriver using Java.

I hope that in future sessions other group members will volunteer to talk on a particular subject or technology which they find interesting, and perhaps give a demonstration or workshop on that subject.

I don't expect our sessions to be just one person talking the whole time about a single subject - I would like everyone to get involved and get out of the group whatever they want to.

Other things I would like to do review is what's going on in the world of testing, books reviews etc.

It's great to see so many people with an interest in a group like this, and our first session will be a good opportunity to meet other like minded people as well as learn from each other and socialise in general.

We will be starting off at SkillsMatter offices, and then moving on to the Slaughtered Lamb pub around the corner for a more informal session.

Toby Henderson will be giving a talk on Mono at the same time, so I am sure the 2 groups will merge at the pub sometime around 7:30 - 8pm.

I'm new to Selenium working with it for the past 2 months only. We're using Bromine as the engine and managment of automated scripts developed in the Seleniium IDE. Several VMs cover the various browser - OS combinations with Selenium RC running on them. Bromine's not the best to work with so I'm definitely interested in your demo (I'm new to Java also). I've used FitNesse briefly but I never got as deep as the fixtures, just the script level. Looking forward to meeting everyone...

I am the host of the meet up, and despite my hiccup with the code demo, I really enjoyed myself. Thanks to everyone for attending - your participation and enthusiasm was first class. I can promise that if any of you decide to come to future meet up's, I will give 100% to make sure it is worth your while. For those who are travelling a long (and short) way to attend - thank you, I really appreciate your participation. Look forward to seeing you all at future meet up's. Nathan..

I thought Nathan did a good job presenting, finding the mid-ground between a chaotic random discussion and a stuffy formal presentation where nobody says a word. He encouraged participation while sharing some useful knowledge in a friendly approachable way. I particularly liked the point he made about FitNesse being a quick and easy way for non-techie people to start writing automatable tests, and how it abstracts the techie stuff by writing it in your own English-like language using terms that your organisation understands and uses. Basically anyone from any discipline can write tests in FitNesse. This is a potential solution to an issue I am currently trying to address. I look forward to the next meetup.

Thought the first meeting was a great success. Thanks to Nathan for organising and speaking and Skillsmatter for hosting. Nice range of things discussed and to continue to discuss and I'm looking forward to the next meeting.

Teething problems with the main demonstration. A lot of people didn't understand Agile. Early days, but with 2 hours travel on top I may not go again.

Nathan organized well, the attendees were great. We came up with so many good ideas at the end of the presentation. Therefore there are loads of things to talk next time so I look forward to meeting you again soon. Thanks everyone...

I found it very interesting as it was time to attend an event like this and also funny how we were all testers (well most of us) but yet the problems we were facing seemed to be the same regardless of what approach was taken to testing. In addition to that I found it useful because I learned about a new testing tool (Finesse) which was very useful and also keyword driven testing too!!!
