Talks & Drinks

We'll be listening to great talks and Marktplaats will provide us with food and drinks.

We can fit up to 40 people and RSVPs close at June 19, 12:00 PM (we need to provide security with the attendee list one day in advance), so be quick!

We've got the following talks confirmed:

- André van Delft with "SubScript"

- Erik Bakker & Nicolas Leroux with "Play Iteratees"

It was nice to see the dataflow programming paradigm doing live video processing in the Play Framework, and how it was specified. Funny that both talks addressed this subject.

The feedback that I received on my talk was very useful. On 1 July at the Scala Workshop in Montpellier I will only have 30 minutes instead of 1 hour; the main focus should then be on the dataflow constructs, whereas I touched those only briefly in my talk this evening. So means I will have to redesign the talk; good to find that out now. I'll drop sheets 6..15 + 19..23 + 28..30 (almost 50%); instead of the GUI application stuff I will show a simple Hello-World like application, and operate it in the SubScript debugger.

AS for a preprocessor: I think that it would be far more complicated and possibly not even technically feasible, since it would require a little type analysis.

(continued) For now I work in a branch of Scalac, and when it is done a bit neatly I hope my stuff will be included in the main Scala distribution as an experimental language extension.

Nice, but one talk an evening might be better to leave more time for socializing and discussions.

You can always afterwards go for a beer ;^) I liked that there were two talks that both dealt with a similar(ish) topic. Maybe alternating on meetups between different formats, say: (long indepth talk) / (two shorter but related talks) / (some 5 min lightning talks and socializing & hacking)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree, we should do both! I really like the idea of having lightning talks and socializing after. Anyway, it's a lesson for us organizers that we should agree on a max. end time so that we can make sure there's time for chat!

Excuse me; I meant Scala Days 2012

  • André van D.

I am very glad with this opportunity to present SubScript: an extension of Scala with the Algebra of Communicating Processes. On 1 July I present a paper on dataflow programming with SubScript at the Scala Worksop of the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) in Montpellier, so it is good to rehearse this. More information on SubScript: http://subscript-lang.org/, including examples, documentation and a link to a video of my presentation at Scala Days 2013.
