FREE Intro to Win 8 App Development Workshop

This is a FREE 4 hour workshop for the absolute beginner who wants to learn how to build Microsoft Windows 8 apps.

Matt Harrington (Technical Evangelist, Microsoft) will be hosting a 4 hour hands-on introduction to App Development for Windows 8. You can check out his blog at

Participants should bring a computer with them. If you don't have a Win 8 computer, not to worry we will be setting up other Windows and Mac OSX systems to work with the development tools. Bring what you have and we will make it work. There is no charge for any of the tools. You don't have to have anything special installed before hand. Mac users will be given a Win8 virtual machine image that works for development. The tools and virtual machine images will also work on other platforms. Just bring your computer and power adapters. FREE wifi will be provided.

Student will learn hands-on how to create Apps in Windows 8 for submission into the Windows 8 store. The focus will be on game programming and some game templates will also be provided. We will create some apps hands-on during this workshop so you want to have a computer to work with.

If you are a college student (at any college and any level) you can participate in the Microsoft contest described on Matt's blog (link above). You DO NOT need to be a college or other student to participate in this workshop. You do not need to participate in the contest to attend the workshop either. Everyone is welcome and the workshop is open to the public!

There will be some Microsoft giveaways and we will also have FREE Pizza and Sodas.

Matt will also be demonstrating how to use a tool called Construct2. Using this tool participants can publish a game in about 5 hours. This workshop is a great opportunity to "get your feet wet" with Win8 app development.

I hope to see you there!

Coming from SF, I have to leave here earlier than I am able to. Such a shame. Thank you for the opportunity.

Here's the other thing to keep in mind when starting later: the LAST CalTrain from San Jose to SF is 10:30! That was my other problem. If I took the train down, what if I missed the last train back. So my suggestion would be to start earlier. That way drivers would miss the evening commute traffic and train people would not have to fret about missing the last train home. Just a thought.

There are pros and cons I guess to starting early and late. :)

For Mac people, how will we be given the Win8 VM? Need to know if I must bring my external CD Drive with my Mac Air. Thx.

Yes, but my Air has no CD Drive so I am needing to know how I am going to load it onto the Mac... or must I truck along an external drive.

I believe all of the software is either downloaded (we have free wifi) or you can get it from supplied USB disks that will be provided.

The Windows 8 image is an evaluation or full copy? #notafanofevalcopies

Good question. I think its a full version but its a VM image not an install disk. It can be used for putting apps into the Windows Store. Participants of the workshop will find out at the workshop.
