Conditioning Hike - Shut in Trail 10.8 miles

Alternative Conditioning Hike Trail (moderate to Strenuous).
The hike begins at the Bent Creek Parking lot and follows the Mountain to Sea trail to Sleepy Gap and back, ( Shut in Trail 10.8 miles). The trail has a sustained climb at the beginning and shorter climbs with switchbacks that reduce the grade at 3+ to 4+ miles (strenuous sections). In-between are milder elevation gains and losses (moderate). This trail includes an overlook and ridge line views of Asheville and the opposing mountains. The return has one sustained climb but more down hill (moderate). The trail is well maintained with smooth pack soil and matted leaves but some areas of with roots and rocks.
This is a brisk paced hike and is great for conditioning and endurance. (approximately 3-3 1/2 hours. Please be sure that you can hike at least 10 miles before signing up for this hike. We will stay together as a group.
Trail Runners are welcome. You can walk the first half or 5.4 miles out and run back on your own (about 2 1/2 hours).
