As a person who has been tested for HFA in the early 1990s (before Asperger’s was widely named) I have both been blessed and struggled with the various “qualities” that go along. I feel that I have been fortunate to have been able to make my way in this world without having to be dependent on others for my livelihood yet still feel I carry a cross at times. I managed to graduate high school, graduate college, have a career, and am planning on going to graduate school next fall. For many years after college I just lived and my “condition” and I do not know if that is the right word, receded to the background. As I reached a point in my life when I felt as I was stagnant and needed a change, I rediscovered the resources available to those in the spectrum and especially Asperger’s. That is where I found the Meetup. Not only for my own benefit, but it has been a pleasure to meet new people and serve as a mentor of sorts for many.
As we have experienced this unfortunate tragedy in Connecticut, I see that the message group has come alive. I challenge everyone on this list, not just because of CT, but for yourself and your loved ones to GET INVOLVED! First and foremost come out to Fuel Pizza every month and or take advantage of the relationship we have built with Mecklenburg Promise. Lurking behind email is only so good when so much more is available! We want to see who you are, we want to get to know you, I would be glad to help in any way.
