Howdy! and NDOP

Meetup Friends,

Howdy! I just joined. I'm so glad you now have a list. :o)

As a proud Texas Atheist activist, I'd like to invite you all to come here
to our Texas State Capitol City to help Austin Atheists from several groups
demonstrate at the Capitol Building for reason, state/church separation, and
freedom from religion. On Thursday, May 3, 2007, we'll be holding a peaceful
demonstration on the sidewalk in front of the Capitol Building at 11th st.
and Congress Ave. in beautiful downtown Austin.

The National Day of Prayer people will have a full plate of religious events
there at the Capitol, starting with a marathon Bible reading inside the
rotunda. Each year, they get some elected officials to take part in prayer,
endorsing prayer, and promoting Christianity, right there inside the Capitol
building. The legislature will be in session that day, so around lunchtime,
we expect most of the government involvement to take place. Atheists from
several different local and national groups plan to be there.

I'm asking all Texas American Atheists members who feel strongly about
things like this to come here to Austin to help us demonstrate. We'll have
picket signs, cameras, and bottled water, we just need more Atheists on the
front lines with us. I'm also contacting all the Texas local groups I can
find, and if you know of other Texas Atheists you think I may not be aware
of, please forward this message to them. We need Atheists in person at this
demonstration, smiling, ready to talk to the media. (We have people
designated for talking to the media, but everyone should also be prepared to
talk up their purpose in being there.)

Please consider coming out to Austin, Thursday, May 3, 2007 at around noon.
We'll be at 11th St. and Congress Ave. It's just a few blocks west of IH-35.
It'll be fun!

Now if you already have plans to demonstrate in your own town, I'd like to
hear about that too, and report on it. I'm the new Texas State Director for
American Atheists, and I'm already hard at work establishing contact with
local Atheist groups in Texas. This day will be a prime day for
communicating our issues with the world.

Photos of our previous two NDOP pickets at the State Capitol can be seen
and here:
and here's just some info about this year's planned demonstration:

I'm also planning to videotape everything, including the other religious
items on display
permanently at that location, of which there are several. In case you
haven't heard, the message "In God We Trust" has recently been painted onto
the wall above the lecterns in both legislative chambers. It's painted in
big block letters, in gold paint, we're told. Yep, it's true.

Here's the other side's national website:

and their list of plans for that day, which is incomplete, even according to

I'd like to see people from several groups there, not just American Atheists
and the Atheist Community of Austin. I'll be representing Texas members of
American Atheists. Please bring signs, and a banner from your group. We need
to show that there are more than one or two groups opposed to government
religious displays like this. Also if your group has an e-mail list, please
forward this message to that list for all to see. We need to maximize our
communication on plans of action like this one. Please circulate this
message. Thanks.

Talk to me, people! :o)
