- Know how to get to all Meeting Places (https://www.google.co.nz/maps/dir/New+World+Supermarket+Victoria+Park+College+Hill,+Freemans+Bay,+Auckland/24+Craig+Road,+Milford,+Auckland/@-36.766465,174.7638338,18z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d0d478d69637789:0x4b161963ee6ce233!2m2!1d174.7513672!2d-36.8486369!1m5!1m1!1s0x6d0d39e4f0874c11:0xf19792986db1a670!2m2!1d174.7661758!2d-36.7661784)(study Google map & directions - even if you won't be driving you may need to help navigate);
- Prepare everything you need to bring (see Bring section below; remember all the shops will be closed).
Meeting Places:
- Victoria Park New World (https://goo.gl/maps/oKN0k) is our initial meeting place for carpooling. (If you haven't met us there before you can read more details here (https://www.meetup.com/auckland-hiking/pages/Meeting_at_Victoria_Park_New_World).)
- 24 Craig Road - Milford (Meet by the Milford Cruising Club)
Carpooling:
- Carpooling will be arranged for everyone meeting at New World after we arrive there (transport permitting; you can read more details here (https://www.meetup.com/auckland-hiking/pages/Transport_and_Carpooling)).
- If you need a ride from New World there's no need to arrange this in advance - just answer the RSVP question on this.
- If you want a ride or can offer rides from another location, you can mention this in Conversation below and contact each other to arrange.
- Best if most drivers meet at New World first. Option to drive straight to Milford is only offered if New World is significantly out of your way.
- Each carpool passenger from New World is asked to give $5 to driver.
Time Guideline:
- 10:15 - Good time to arrive at New World, meet & greet
- 10:30 - Latest time to arrive at New World, arrange carpooling
- 10:35 - Leave New World
- 11:05 - Everyone arrive Milford Beach.
Hike Description:
- Starting at Milford Reserve we will go North across the new bridge up the hill and down through the walking tracks to Castor Bay. There is an option then to return along the coastline (for the adventurous hikers) or return the same way - for those people who have an aversion to getting wet feet at the beach.
Bring:
- lunch and drink
- clothing suitable for summer.
- footwear suitable for easy walking surfaces.
- sun and rain protection
- towel and swimming gear (if interested to swim)
- plastic bags for dirty footwear
- additional clean clothing/footwear to change into after hike
- first-aid items
- cash ($5 if carpool passenger; plus optional extra for refreshments afterwards)
Notes:
(1) - Nothing
(2) We aim to leave New World and start the hike exactly on time, and are unlikely to wait for late people. Arriving early is good :-)
(3) It is safer and generally more fun to hike together as a group. We aim to do this with stops at all track junctions for group to regather. However, there's no guarantee this will happen so prepare well for this hike in case you become separated from group.
See you Xmas Day - Chris
