  • Mar 12, 2013 · 7:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Node.js is a JavaScript based application building platform. In this introduction to the topic, learn why Node.js is becoming so popular, how to set up an application, and try it out yourself.

This will be a workshop, so feel free to bring your own laptop if you'd like to take part. Node.js can be installed from http://nodejs.org

Great, I was particularly interested in the threading aspect and asynchronous bus queuing and looking at it particularly in regard to its potential for mobile apps or programming a remote controller...

Here's that Node Remote Controlled Helicopter code we were talking about: https://github.com/oth...

      1 · March 13, 2013

    • Colm B.

There may be some limitations that the interactive toy helicopter eg Control Application for ITC Trident Helicopter must be built to allow itself to be programmed remotely, or have a wire interface to its controller eg a sound mixer/recording device. There are apps that allow Android or IOS to connect over wifi eg https://itunes.apple.c... and with these you could test your Node.js code provided theyn allow you to interface.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a bit scared of node at first, but this has now demystified it for me. I'll definitely be doing more with node. Thanks a million for a great presentation!

For those of us who want to follow along on our laptops, is installing node enough or do we need more?

    March 12, 2013

    • Donovan H.

Hi Peter. Just Node is fine, but I'm also planning on showing how Express.js is installed. If you want to get the head start on that, you can install it after Node, by running:

      npm install -g express

Then initialise a new app with:

      express my_app

This will set up the file structure. Navigate to the my_app folder and run "npm install" to grab dependencies, and your app will be good to go. If you then run "node app" you'll have a web app running at localhost:3000.

You are currently working with mongodb and you want to start with node? Or you want node to work with mongodb?

      March 11, 2013

    • Donovan H.

I'll be happy to chat about using Mongo tomorrow. I'd recommend checking out Mongoose, it's a nicely implemented ORM http://mongoosejs.com...

If anyone has any requests on topics or things they'd like to cover do let me know. My example node app is online at beta.hop.ie, and I'll be covering how to set up a web facing app, consume some third party API content, setting up and monitoring an upp on an Ubuntu server, and some tips for debugging.

No laptop required, I'll structure it as a talk firstly on what Node's about, show off some tools and modules, and then walk through a basic example.
