The Austin Python Meetup Monthly Meetup
Details
Along the lines of "Learning Python" and being more welcoming to Python novices, we will start our November meetup with a tutorial from Ryan Murphy. Whether you're totally new to programming or already have experience with Python or another programming language, this interactive intro to Python will help you get acquainted with Python and with basic programming concepts, such as defining variables and functions, using different data types such as strings, lists and dictionaries, outputting messages to the screen and taking input from the keyboard, and reading/writing files. The presentation seeks to give you real-world knowledge and experience by showing you live coding examples directly in the Python interpreter, rather than giving you concepts and topics in a PowerPoint format. You can even follow along by typing the examples into your own Python shell.
Bill Bergmann has volunteered to run another "What do you use?" session, following on from last time. Many interesting topics remain to be covered: Databases & NoSQL, Graphics, Testing, Online Courses, Text Processing, GUIs, etc.
Additionally, Bill will do a short presentation of CheckIO, an intriguing new web-based adventure game where you have to write Python code to interact with the world: http://www.checkio.org/welcome/
And lastly, we will open the floor for a short Q&A session.
Please Note: Starting November 2012, we will be meeting at the Capital Factory space on the 16th floor of the Omni Hotel in downtown Austin! This is our new regular location!
