Images and WordPress

Good photos, logos, icons and other images on a site are key to a website's appeal, popularity and conversion rates.

Tracy Cannon and Jackie Dana will talk about the importance of images to a successful website; how to use the media uploader; the new(ish) galleries available through the Jetpack plugin; the value of the alt tag and captions for SEO; copyright-free sources for images; and anything else there's time to discuss. The focus of this meetup will be on native WordPress functionality and Jetpack rather than third-party plugins.

We did a version of this topic at a weekday Focus on Content meetup which only a few people attended. Since the conversation was so interesting and people seemed to get a lot out of it, we decided to do this again for a larger evening crew!

**Note: this is a great meetup for beginners and intermediate users to attend.

Thanks for the link. I wasn't able to make it, last minute stuff, and I appreciate the help. Thanks again.

two other image editors for PC:
    - irvanview.com (free for non commercial use) - baby sister to Photoshop. Does much of what PS does but no layers

    - www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize : resizes JPGs. Download photoresize400.exe to desktop. change 400 to the desired width in pixels and drag one or more JPG on top of the icon. Voila! resized and stored in the same folder with the number appended (flower.jpg and flower-1024.jpg)

We didn't take notes at this meetup, but check out on WPAustin.com for links to good "how to" documentation, free image editors, and Jetpack info. http://wpaustin.com/2013/06/images-and-media-library/

Last night the wonderful lady several chairs over brought up two URL that help with photo resizing and compression. Including on that is link on desktop for drag & drop. She gave me the URL's and I had input into my email notes and laptop battery went away with my note! If that person could send the group (me) the links again it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    jim

I learned a few things but this was definitely more geared toward novice users. This was my first meetup event so I wasn't sure what to expect.

      I have MANY questions!

You bet I will. All that Wordpress-speak just went right over my head! I don't remember anyone ever even saying what Jetpack is at any Meetup I've attended. I've figured a lot out from how terms are used in context, but its the slower way to do it.

I believe I remember a discussion about it being best to upload and store your images in your Wordpress.com Media Lobrary, even though they are being used on a website hosted elsewhere. Did I get that right? It seems odd. Can we talk about that?

    June 24, 2013

    • Jackie D.

Actually, to use the spiffy Jetpack galleries, Photon, etc. you would still upload your images in your .org site's media library, but you would connect your site to WordPress.com via Jetpack to make these things work.

Feel free to bring that up again tomorrow night though!

Can you include on how to upload/insert an interactive mind map from apps like MindManager or CMap?

    June 20, 2013

    • Jackie D.

Charles, I'm not sure how to do that without an iframe, which I hate to use. I'd recommend searching for plugins that can help you embed a mindmap - assuming, of course, the mindmapping software doesn't generate an embed code to begin with. To be honest, I haven't used mindmapping software in a few years so I'm really not an expert here.
