Here's your chance beginners! You can attend this meetup too. We will have 2 groups that will have different start time.
Beginners: Join us at shelter 5 on Friday night. On Saturday, you will shuttle cars to Butler Lake and start your hike to shelter 2 from there. The hike will be about 8 miles or so. Intermediate level will start at shelter 5 and we will all meet at shelter 2 on Saturday night. Same amount of miles will be done from both group on Sunday night.
If you plan on hiking the intermediate route, please be advised that this is a long mileage hike and only those who are physically fit can hike it.
Friday September 6th.
Assemble at Backpacking Shelter 5 after 5pm as your schedule permits. The hike from the Greenbush kettle parking area to the shelter is about 0.3 mile. Parking is located on Kettle Moraine Drive. Parnell Trail Area will have access to water as well as Butler Lake trail area will have a hand pump where we will be able to fill up.
I plan on shuttling the car for the intermediate group on Friday night so we can get moving early on saturday morning without having to worry about the cars.
Saturday September 7th
BEGINNERS route: Shuttle car to Butler Lake. Start hike from parking area and hike to Shelter 2. Hike is about 8 miles. Make sure you fill your water at this location.
INTERMEDIATE route: The hike from Shelter 5 to Shelter 2 is about 15.9 miles. Depending on how early we hike out we can have lunch at Butler lake where there will be water available and tables.
Sunday September 8th
Intermediate will hike another 7.5 miles to shelter 1 parking lot.
Beginners will have to decide at the moment of shuttling their car on Saturday morning, if they plan on hiking only 3 miles to the New Fane Trail or follow the 7.5 miles intermediate route.
The shelters do have a pit toilet/outhouse but do not have a water source. They don’t have a fireplace (outside fire ring only) or stove but provide excellent protection from the wind and elements. Participation will be limited to 10 persons based on the DNR shelter occupancy limit. There are benches along the walls to sleep on but they won’t accommodate 10 people. There is plenty of floor space and we are allowed to set up tents around the shelter. A State park parking sticker is required for parking in the Kettle Moraine area.
Average temps for this time of year: High = 71, Low = 50
