Until I moved to San Francisco, I helped organize meet-ups for Los Angeles Vegans and Vegetarians Over Forty -- http://www.meetup.com/Veg40plus / .  I wanted to participate in something similar in the Bay Area, and decided I might as well try to start it myself.

If you think of this as a dining club for vegans and vegetarians over forty, well, you won't be disappointed. I'll pick a vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurant, make arrangements with restaurant staff, announce a date and see who signs up. Veg40+ in Los Angeles grew gradually, and I hope this group does, too.

In Los Angeles I sometimes arranged after-the-meal events -- a trip to the Getty, for instance -- but found that what interested most members were the restaurants ... and the great food!

I'll borrow a few practices that made a positive difference in Los Angeles:

  • Please come to events you sign up for. It's fine with me if you join the group and then lurk for months without ever signing up for anything -- but once you say, "I'll be there!," please do follow through. Restaurants set aside table space for big groups, and may make special arrangements to insure staff is on hand. It's embarrassing to show up with three people when the restaurant expects fifteen.
  • Please join with a real picture of yourself. We meet in real life and 3D; we're not just avatars!
