Mission Cliffs - Gym Meetup (All Levels)

It's our regular Wednesday night meetup at Mission Cliffs, San Francisco. Traditionally the meeting time was 7:00, but I won't be there until 7:30. After climbing a bunch of my friends head to the Phoenix for food and beer. All are welcome to join!

All levels are welcome! New climbers will need to take a belay safety class, offered through Mission Cliffs. The belay safety class starts at 7:30 pm and it's recommended that you show up a bit earlier to get a better chance of snagging a spot (at least 15 min prior). There's also an earlier class at 6pm.

For all other levels, you will need to get a belay card if you don't have one. Just tell the person at the counter you need a belay card when you purchase your day pass. You will be required to go through a belay safety check to get the belay card.

What to expect:
This Meetup is designed to bring local climbers together, and to provide an easy way for people to find climbing partners. We'll meet, break into partners to climb, then climb until ???. After climbing, some of us will go out for food and a beer.

Everyone in the Meetup is supportive, and everyone is happy to climb with new climbers, but but this meetup is not an instructional course. You need to know how to belay safely to climb. If you don't know how to belay, or are unsure of your belay skills, you should take the belay class offered by the gym.

Day pass after 3pm is $18.
Equipment rental (shoes/harness/belay device) is $5.
Belay safety class is $28 (includes a day pass and rentals too!).

We will meet by the big glass windows/door in the back corner of the gym. There is less of a crowd there, so it will be easier to identify the Meetup group.

I'm at the gym - just wanted to say hi to the group but have no idea how to spot you. Next week!

Hi Richard, Frieda, Nora, john, John D., and Eileen: I need your help tomorrow (Wed 9/19) -- specifically a person's time to help me take the belay safety check test to get a belay card. I took Mission Cliffs' belay class today, and I'm instructed to return tomorrow with a partner to take their belay safety check test. Would one of you who are attending this event kindly help me? You can either reply here, message me directly, or text/call me tomorrow at 510.648.0370. I appreciate your help. Thank you so much in advance!

Free sounds great for me. I do not have my belay checked off either though. Is this going to be a problem?

Nora, today by phone, I found out that there are two types of tests...

      1. For a permanent belay card test, I should be able to do it solo with a staff without needing a dedicated partner; I'll stop by 6:30pm today to reconfirm in person.

      2. There's a different test, a lead test, where one would need to bring his or her own partner, and use personal rope. One'd need a permanent belay card (from #1) first, before taking the lead test.

Nora, thank you for offering to help, and I apologize for the confusion. Assuming that I don't need a dedicated partner to test at 6:30pm today, then I'll try it solo -- then meet remainder of our meetup group attendees at 7:30pm by the big glass windows/door in the back corner of the gym. Cheers!
