‘Us’ and the ‘others’: the formation of a comparative gaze in European history

Details
Dr. Stavros Moutsios, guest scientist at the Humboldt University, has very kindly offered to give a lecture based on his current research. For an abstract, please read on:
"How has Europe seen other civilizations throughout its history? The lecture will examine the emergence and institutionalisation of the European – and, in broader sense, western – comparative gaze in two pivotal periods in the continent’s history: Greek Antiquity and European Modernity. We will overview the social-historical context that makes these two areas special in the way other cultures were seen and approached. The lecture will conclude by reflecting also on how these traditions are impacting today on the way we see and compare societies under the conditions of globalization."
When you arrive at Aufsturz, please ask for directions to the klubraum. Alternatively, I will sit at the front of the bar with a red umbrella until 1655. Please arrive on time: we will have to start at precisely 1700 as we will only have use of the room until 1930.
