Seattle To Portland Social Series Group Rides -- Two Day Riders
This is the first of many rides for this series, we'll start with a leisurely ride to kick it all off.
A map of the ride can be found --> here <--.
We'll gather by the restrooms at Gasworks Park at 10:45am and leave at 11am sharp. We'll wander out of Gasworks, through UW, around Lake Union and back. Simple and easy with very little climbing.
Have an idea for a future group ride for this series?
I’m always open to new ideas. If you have a suggestion or a cool route for us to go on, then shoot me an email and be sure to include something mapped (MapMyRide or RideWithGPS, etc) so that I can go over it and share with the others.
I’m also looking for anyone who might be willing to lead rides. There may be a time where I might not be able to make it and it’d be nice to have someone who can pick up the reins and take it over for a time or two. Shoot me an email if you’re interested.
About this series:
Get excited people! STP 2012 will be here before you know it! For those of you who are not familiar with STP please refer to Cascade Bicycle Club’s website for further info.
The primary purpose of these group rides are aimed at the new(ish) and seasoned rider who are interested and/or already registered for this year's STP and would like to form a group of like-minded people to ride with on the way down.
This is the two day riders group, if you are planning on doing a one day ride there may be another group forming for that purpose, but this one is for two day riders, please.
We’ll kick it off with easier rides and work our way up to more difficult rides and partake in the Cascade events along the way (Chilly Hilly 33 mile course & Flying Wheels 64 mile course). Then arrange to meet the day of STP to ride down together. The plan is to make camp overnight in Centralia and then on to Portland the next morning. You don’t need to attend every ride to join us, but I would like to see those who are planning on being part of this group to show up for at least 5 or 6 rides with us.
February - May rides are weather permitting. Steady rain will cancel; I’ll try to post this at least 1 day in advance.
June - July rides are rain or shine; dress accordingly because these rides are the ones that count the most and the day of the STP holds no guarantees on weather.
Are you right for this group?
Everyone is welcome, just please be able to maintain an average of at least 14 MPH or higher. We can make exceptions on the shorter rides as you work your way up but as the rides get longer we’d like to maintain an average so that we can make it into Centralia and then onto Portland within a reasonable amount of time without leaving anyone behind.
Do you have to be registered for the STP to attend?
It would be strongly recommended that you are either going or toying with the idea of going this year. Be aware that the STP always sells out and if you delay too long you may miss your chance. It’ll be epic, trust me!
Have you (the organizer, Scott) done the STP before?
I have not. However, the main purpose of this group is not so much for training but socializing. I can tell you what I know, based on research and talking to others that have done it before, but I have no personal experience yet with this event. I have done a lot of group rides before and can give you the basics of group riding. Practice makes perfect and there is no better way than just doing it. If you have STP experience that you’d like to share with the group, email me and we can set something up. Aside from that, Cascade does offer training classes and will be holding forums at REI about what to expect and some Q&A.
What will you need for these rides?
● A working and preferably tuned up bike ready by the start time of the ride -- Road or Hybrid
● An extra tube in case you get a flat
● A helmet -- This is not optional
● Water and snacks or money for snacks -- Some rides, especially the longer ones, will have food rest stops at a restaurant or deli. Be sure to have money or a bagged lunch for those rides. These rides will be noted in the title.
