It is very important that you read this and understand it completely. Please feel free to ask questions.

It's that time of the year when we can have enough daylight to do the Iron Butt Association ride for our certificates, license plate backers and pins. Since 2010, the IBA has awarded 105 Saddle Sore 1000 or Bun Burner 1500 certificates to riders on this meetup.

This is the same route that we did in 2013, and again in 2015. This route leaves Seattle, goes out on I-90. We will go down Canyon Road to the I-82 junction. We will take I-82 to get back to I-90. We then ride out to East Missoula. We will come back and stop at Famous Dave's for some BBQ. Sounds great, but don't eat a heavy meal! We will then ride back to Issaquah. As a few have pointed out, there are not closer Famous Dave's locations. That isn't the point!

I'll be riding along as a witness this year to verify completion of the ride. Others that have already qualified can come along as witnesses (no fee, but does not go in the official IBA file - if you're already in there, it doesn't really matter...once you're in "The Book of Life", you're in there forever. If you act as a witness, you cannot claim credit with the IBA for the ride. Additional certified rides do count towards Mile Eater status.

I will be using the group ride rules, which will hopefully work a bit better than last year. You don't have to deal with the witness forms. You sign in at the beginning, you give me your receipts and sign out at the end. Less headaches for you, and hopefully a bit smoother for me this year!

Critical Stuff!

Please read the IBA rules at this link: http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1

Paperwork I will need from you: (this is different from the standard IBA forms, as we are using the Group Ride rules to reduce paperwork)

  1. A signed release (I will bring them on Saturday morning)

  2. An envelope with the following information on the front. This will be used to collect your information. No need to put a stamp on it.

  • Your Name
  • Your IBA number if you already have one
  • Year, Make, Model of your motorcycle
  • You Address (So the IBA can send you your stuff!)
  • Starting odometer reading
  • Ending odometer reading
  1. Inside the envelope
  • all gas receipts from the ride. Please number them and put your odometer reading from the time you fuel up. I will hold on to these in case we get audited. If you do not turn these in, I will not be able to include you in the ride.
  • The fees are: (Confirmed)
  • $33 if you just want the certificate (done this before)
  • $42 if you want the certificate, plate backer, and pin
  1. I will give you a receipt with my contact information, as you gave me money.

  2. something to write with!

Make sure you are covered! Read your motorcycle and medical insurance policies. I am not an insurance agent, nor I am allowed to sell insurance in Washington. GEICO in particular has been known to use daily mileage limits as a reason to deny coverage. Read and understand your policy, it may not be sufficient to just check with your agent.

Due to posting this ride so far in advance, I will be deleting posts that are not related to this ride. This will be done at my, or Pat's, discretion.

I also ask you to turn messaging for this ride on. This ride requires quite a bit of administrative work. If I cannot get ahold of you, I will assume that you are no longer interested in participating and reserve the right to delete your RSVP.

I may also limit the ride attendance. If you RSVP, and do not go, you may be taking the spot of someone who wants to go!

Now all that is out of the way, here is how this works:

Ride difficulty: EXTREME! (not for beginning riders!)

The Saddle Sore 1000 is a rite of passage for the hard core motorcyclist. This is a test of your endurance, machine and beating the clock.

There will be few comfort breaks, gas stops only as needed and a very short lunch/dinner break. You can expect to be on your machine for at least 17 hours.

Riding with the group gives safety in case of any serious issues (crashes, etc), but if you or your bike can't make the ride for whatever reason, you'll pretty much be on your own for getting your bike out and back home, as everybody on this ride is trying to qualify within a time frame.

We may break the ride up into groups based on the fuel range of their motorcycles. This will help ease congestion at the gas stations as well as allowing riders to 'do their own ride' with other members that have the same fuel range. I'll wait at the bar near the final fueling station 60-90 min (Issaquah) for those arriving later than the group I'll be leading. Please post your fuel range when you RSVP so I can get an idea of who can lead which group. To complete this successfully, you need to have a fuel range of at least 150 miles. Below is the ride route.

We'll stop for lunch at Famous Dave's in Missoula. They were able to get a large group of hungry bikers fed right away last time, so we should be back on the road within 45 min.

  1. Be at the Starbucks by 5AM. Find me next to a black BMW K1600GT. We will check out your odometer reading. This will be verified. The address is: 2137 N Northgate Way Seattle, WA 98133, Seattle, WA
