3. Why not just use plain ol push notifications (GCM) and use a typical web server with a web service running (with a REST API). It would be as efficient as using an XMPP server and you can use Retrofit as well. I remember reading that Whatsapp works this way so you could go for this way and it would be perfectly fine!
