As summer ends, autumn begins and the nights draw in. What better excuse for curling up with a book, and we have two thought provoking books that should certainly fit the bill. The Turn of the Screw
by Henry James
(nominated by Christina) is a novella. An anonymous narrator recalls a Christmas Eve gathering at an old house, where guests listen to one another?s ghost stories. A guest named Douglas introduces a story that involves two children?Flora and Miles?and his sister?s governess, with whom he was in love. After procuring the governess?s written record of events from his home, he provides a few introductory details. A handsome bachelor persuaded the governess to take a position as governess for his niece and nephew in an isolated country home after the previous governess died. Douglas begins to read from the written record, and the story shifts to the governess?s point of view as she narrates her strange experience...
Described by Oscar Wilde as a ?most wonderful, lurid, poisonous little tale? and acclaimed for its atmosphere and tension, The Turn of the Screw promises to be a spine tingling read. The Castle
by Franz Kafka
(nominated by Sam) is the story of ?K?, an unwanted land surveyor who is never to be admitted to the Castle nor accepted in the village below, and yet cannot go home. As he encounters dualities of certainty and doubt, hope and fear, and reason and nonsense, K?s struggles in this absurd labyrinthine world seem to reveal an inexplicable truth about the nature of existence. Although technically never finished, this last of Kafka?s three great novels nonetheless draws fascinating conclusions that make it feel strangely complete.
A great novel by an undeniably influential novelist, The Castle deals with themes of theology, bureaucracy and abuse of power.
The other nominations for September were
Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold (Danny)
The Girl who Kicked the Hornet?s Nest by Stieg Larsson (Eleanor)
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh (Jo)
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell (Oonagh)
Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (John)
