Using the Scala.js Ecosystem: a Case Study

Abstract

The enormous speed improvements in modern browsers have provoked the rise of languages that compile down to JavaScript, treating it as a sort of assembly language. Over the past couple of years, a number of folks have been pursuing the dream of bringing Scala to this environment, and that project -- Scala.js -- is maturing rapidly.

This talk will provide a flying overview of the Scala.js ecosystem -- the compiler, the SBT tools, the libraries for communications, testing, integration and so on -- as well as lessons learned from porting a moderately complex web front end to a pure-Scala web client. Come learn about one of the most-useful and least-known parts of the Scala community.

About the speaker

Mark Waks (aka Justin du Coeur (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jducoeur)) is a lifelong programmer; over a 30-year career spanning ten companies (mostly startups), he has worked in most of the major languages and environments at one time or another, at most levels of the software stack.
