... we'll be passing the hat for a local charity we've supported in the past, namely Action for Boston Community Development (http://www.bostonabcd.org
), as you can read at http://www.meetup.com/bostonatheists/events/141494522/
I'm keen to know if any members would be interesting in making a further commitment in showing the involvement of secular Bostonians in supporting the local community, by attending the ABCD Annual Awards Gala later this fall: https://bostonabcd.org/buy-tickets-to-the-gala.aspx
This event is a fundraiser, and tickets for individuals are $250. It may well be that some of our members would be able to attend by paying directly out of pocket, so as to join in celebrating the good work done by ABCD (and to see guest speaker Spike Lee!). Further, this would be a good opportunity to be seen AS atheists, participating actively in the civic life of our larger community. For all that we enjoy our brunch meetings and pub nights and philosophical discussion, I know how many of you have expressed a desire that the Boston Atheists evolve from merely a social group, into an honest-to-goodness community organization, with all the activity that entails: social events, yes, but also service, and cultural enrichment, and education, and mutual aid. It's about time we started making known that we put our values into action, and that we belong to a community that promotes such action.
So, I invite you to take a look at the Gala event page, and let me know if you think you could attend. Alternately, let me know if you'd like to make a contribution to a Boston Atheists fund drive, so that one of our members CAN go, using a ticket bought with money raised by the group. If you'd like to be on the short list of people to attend, let President Josiah Van Vliet know -- [address removed]. If we raise $250, one of our members will attend; if we raise $500, our President will join that member; if we raise $750, Josiah and TWO members will attend. All proceeds go directly to the ABCD, so all our folks would be getting out of it is a free meal and a night of entertainment, on the understanding that they're to mention their nontheist status if the occasion allows. So you're money would be going firstly to a fantastic nonprofit, and secondly to underwrite a chance for our members to publicize the reality that ATHEISTS CARE ABOUT COMMUNITY.
If we don't raise $250 at least, then whatever money DOES come in will simply be sent directly to ABCD as a donation made on behalf of the Boston Atheists. A win-win.
Any member who has ideas for other ways the BA can step up to the plate as a partner in our larger community, let Josiah known -- [address removed]. It's HIS job to hear your wishes and act on them, facilitating them with the resources available to our organizational leadership. It's YOUR job to let him know where and how you want our community group to direct its attention, compassion, energy, and donations.
