Obama's Speech in Newtown, CT

I heard the Obama Newtown speech and was so disappointed in the religious stuff. References to heaven, god, prayer, christ and more. I don't think a minister could have been more secular. I was so disappointed -- and wondered why he did it?

I suppose I understood it as a pragmatic decision to avoid potentially divisive language. A reminder that the smaller part of our work is thinking through the philosophical and empirical grounds of atheism. Fine, right, sure, there aren't any gods around here. The larger part of our work is cultivating a culture in which pluralism can be manifest without any party feeling that their segment has been somehow slighted.

Perhaps we could take a view to future state occasions, and write a letter recommending ways the President's speech-writers, or the President, can be more inclusive without sacrificing a sense of real feeling.
