Back to the Basics: What is Cloud, What is Azure, and Intro to Windows Azure

For our November 17 installment of Boston Azure, we will provide an overview/lecture style talk to orient you the cloud - what is this Cloud thing? and why ought I care? - then proceed to coverage of the Windows Azure Cloud Platform - and finish with some demonstrations of how you can get starting coding against the Windows Azure Cloud Platform.

Featured speakers will be Mark Eisenberg from Microsoft and Bill Wilder from Boston Azure.

Stay tuned for more details (we are still organizing the order of content delivery), but here are the basics:

  • 6:00 PM - meeting opens - gather, grab pizza, get a drink, socialize
  • 6:15 PM - Mark Eisenberg will introduce the cloud - what kinds of clouds are there, why do you care - and provide an overview of the Windows Azure Cloud Platform.
  • 7:00 PM - short break, grab pizza, get a drink, socialize
  • 7:15 PM - Bill Wilder will dig into the Windows Azure Cloud Platform - what are the major services it offers, how you can take advantage of them, and will walk through how you can get access to (free) tools, and how you can build and deploy an application using C# and the local Cloud Simulation environment.
  • 8:15 PM - wrap up - give-aways, annoucements
  • 8:30 PM - go for a cold drink at local watering hole

Also - note carefully the date - the Thursday before Thanksgiving. This meeting is not on our usual rhythm due to holidays.

Hey All - Just updated the meeting description. Mark Eisenberg from Microsoft will open with his unique spin on what is cloud and how the Windows Azure Cloud Platform fits into that space, followed by me (Bill) digging more into specifics of Azure services, tooling, and we'll walk through building a simple app.

This was a fantastic talk. Thanks to Bill and Mark for their excellent presentation and their patience in answering all the questions from audience. It was a very successful event and I think the audience was very interested in the topic. Maybe it's good to have "back to basics" topics. Thanks again guys.
