Network Visualization - Everything You Wanted to Know (but were afraid to ask)

Details

Hi Folks!

It's time for yet another Boston Data Visualization meetup, and we have quite a treat for our next get together: Frank Van Ham, an expert in everything network visualization related, is going to teach us everything we need to know about this incredibly useful visualization technique.

Abstract:

From Facebook connections to program code, and from biological food chains to bank transactions, many types of real-world data can be represented as networks. Network visualization deals with generation of (possibly interactive) images representing these types of network data. In this practically oriented talk Frank will give an overview of the most common algorithms for drawing networks and diving into some in more detail. Additionally he will present common pitfalls when implementing network visualization algorithms, and give some tips for dealing with larger network datasets.

About Frank:

Frank van Ham is a research staff member at IBM. His main research interests are large network visualization, visual information interfaces and collaborative visualization. Currently, he is embedded within IBM/ILOG in Paris, France where he works on improving the visualization capabilities of IBM product. He has previously acted as paper co-chair for the IEEE Conference on Information Visualization in both 2010 and 2011 and has served as guest editor for IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications. Frank holds a PhD and Msc in Computer Science from the Eindhoven University of Technology.

This meetup is looking for food and beverage sponsorship! If you would like to help us out, email irene at bocoup.com.
