Gabriel Florit: Instant Feedback

After a long haitus, I am beyond delighted to have yet another wonderful speaker join us!

Description:

Most creative processes exhibit instant feedback. A painter's brush stroke immediately colors the canvas. A guitarist's fingerpicking immediately creates sound. An opera singer's vocal chords immediately fill the room with her voice. Coding, also a creative process, often lacks this immediate feedback, replacing it instead with the familiar write-compile-load cycle. In this talk, Gabriel Florit will present various browser-based tools that try to add instant feedback to the creation of web graphics. Examples presented will be written in html/css/javascript/d3.

Thank you PayPal Data Science for Sponsoring this meetup! Pizza & Beer will be available.

About Gabriel:

Gabriel Florit makes data visualizations for the Boston Globe. Previously, he wrote software to keep track of trains, fell 200 feet off a mountain and got lost in Alaska for two years.

A few thoughts on instant feedback concepts and their applicability beyond the IDE, inspired by last nights' presentation: http://blog.datamarket.com/2012...

I mentioned the Kaggle data visualization contest last night
    so here is the link
    https://www.kaggle.com/c/harvard...

I'd be interested in joining with some of you data viz gurus to work on it; my specialty would be more on the analytics.

In any case, thank you Gabriel for the talk.
Great content and wonderful presentation style.
As for positioning objects on the page, when are you
going to add a feature that just lets me drag
my graphics around on the left side
and records the position in the HTML on the right side?
    Easy ... right?

Great presentation. Señor Florit is an excellent presenter. He has done a great job building his livecoding tool. Seems like a perfect teaching tool for students. I have already shared it with my kids.

    Greetings fellow data visualization gurus,
As a new member, I am thrilled to attend tomorrow’s event. I come from a background in business intelligence, where I’ve worked with data visualization of healthcare interactions and outcomes. I love working with large and messy datasets, identifying patterns, building visual dashboards, and gleaning valuable business insights. Although I’ve used Tableau (point and click data visualization software) with SSAS, SQL server, and Access, I am not a programmer and seek to best leverage my skillset.

I was wondering if any of the experts here might offer any suggestions regarding how to explore the next steps in my career.

    With kindest regards,
    Ben Shaykevich
