Title of Presentation – Customizing Hadoop/Hive for Non-Standard Data Formats

Short Description – Our company (Nuance) uses the Hadoop Hive data warehouse to store and query computer event logs. Hive has many nice features and generally meets our needs. But it does not contain native support for the format of our logs, Google Protocol Buffers, so we have customized Hive to handle them. This talk gives a short background about Hive and why we chose it, then explains how we used the Hive plug-in architecture to write our own Serializer-Deserializer (SerDe) and User Defined Function (UDF) for protobufs. The methods we used allow for general customization of Hive, so apply to other file formats and special operations.
