Fireworks and Sparklers are NOT allowed on the beaches or in the parks either.  This is also fineable.

This was our first meetup and even though the heavens opened up on us, we had a fantastic time. Thank you to whoever brought the toffee apples, my children adored them and I can see that I will be making them soon. We look forward to attending future events.

Thanks again SA&H! Despite the weather and being thoroughly cold and soaked, everyone displayed a good sense of humor and camaraderie. (Isn't the UK known for rain and drinking? We ended up doing JUST that, why whinge? LOL) Thx also to all who brought delicious treats and cleaned up.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend yesterday. I ended up having to work and then it just got too wet and cold to come out. Clearly, I've been living in California too long! ;-) Thanks to all those who put this together. A lot of work was put into the event, and even though I wasn't able to enjoy the fruits of your labor, I appreciate it. I look forward to the next event.

I was much impressed by our fortitude in withstanding the elements, munching on chicken wings, ribs and baked potatoes and laughing. Thanks to ALL for making it a great event.

Wasn’t sure what the weather would do planned to get down to the site for about 7.30ish, just as everyone had left it would seem. TBH probably the most British I’ve felt since I’ve been here standing in the pouring rain around a fire pit. Nevertheless thanks for putting in the hard work and I look forward to meeting many of you at future events. (5 stars because the weather is a bitch)

Many thanks to Sylvia & co for all their hard work. Such a pity the weather let us down, and left little choice but to abandon. Food was set up and fires lit when I got there about 5pm, and only light rain. But it steadily got worse - cold, windy, driving rain and even hardiest bailed out by 6:30 or 7. But we burned the guys, drank hot choc, ate mince pies and laughed and commiserated and got soaking wet. Sylvia and crew had a daunting task packing up in driving rain and were great througout

We so enjoyed meeting all the hardy souls who turned up for the event and thanks to Sylvia and all the others who put in a lot of effort to try and make this work. We were truly unlucky with the weather but Sylvia's idea to relocate to the Pig and Whistle was brilliant. The beer, wine and company were first rate and, yes, the comment attached to the photo of Grahame and I wasn't far off the mark! Bloody good fun, all in all, and it's always enjoyable to chat to fellow Brits and their friends.

I was quite impressed by the amount of effort, and the smiles through the storm. Cheers for a job well done. Don't concern yourselves with the twats, those of us who stayed for hours, soaked and sandy appreciate the effort.

Loss of one star for the weather - but that's not really fair is it?! Thanks awfully to the crew who put this together and is currently enduring a rather unrealistic and snotty woman and thanks also to the members who contributed past their fee and were chatty and laughing in the face of adversity.

Memorable Guy Fawkes! A little windy and a bit dampish but certainly offset by the lovely food and camaraderie. A good lesson to 'be prepared' for beach weather stays with me. Thanks to everyone bringing things, helping and smiling through the gale!

    November 6, 2011

  • Sylvia

Oh I noticed that some people took pictures down at the beach could you please email them to me? Thanks!

Hi Everyone... First thank you to all of you that came and braved the wind, torrential downpour and sand burn!! We really appreciate all of you that did make it. I'll be cleaning out my car today so if I find anything that isn't mine I'll let you know. As far as other comments I'll be sending an email to all that RSVP'd. Thanks again Everyone. Sylvia

Very bad luck with the weather. I showed up at about 8 to meet a friend (I'd been on a 125-mile bicycle ride in east bay earlier in the day). Not surprisingly it was all packed up and everybody gone by then. I'd have done the same, and even if some die-hards had still been standing around the fire, I don't think I'd have stuck around for long. A big thanks to the volunteer organizers who worked hard on this event, and it's unfortunate the weather spoiled it.

I was supposed to be tkaing photos of the event. I apologise that I have none of the beach, but because of the inclement weather, I didn't dare take out my camera. I have some images of us 'making the best of it' at the Pig and Whistle afterwards and can send large resolution pix to members if they wish. Richard PJ

For those of you complaining, organise a meet-up yourselves we can see your proposed expertise in action and lets hope the rain holds off for your event. It was called off due to rain, which was back by 8:30pm too so the respite was short lived. you could write a letter to the US meterological society or put it down to bad weather and find another meet-up group that suits you more.

    1 · November 6, 2011

Well never thought I would be a member of a Brit meet up group and hear complaints about rain! I really feel sorry for the organisers who's level of organisation is to be admired. We all know how difficult the administration of anything in the US can be! I knew it started at 4pm and that 'guys' would be burned between 7-9pm. I don't know that Guy fawkes was drowned before being burned but it is an aspect we may want to review for the next one. ha ha!

@KD, you should really be ashamed of yourself posting these comments! The organisers worked VERY hard to make it a good evening for all. The unfortunate weather was entirely out of their control! They also posted a map with very clear directions as well as making it very clear that it started at 4pm!!!! Thank you very much to the organisers of the British Expat Group for organising yesterday and the entire group! :)

Thank you to Sylvia, Amy, Heather and a lot of other people for doing everything humanly possible to make this event a success. I was there from about 6 to 7:15 pm and got well and truly soaked in that time. To 'give in' to Mother Nature was definitely the right decision, as the driving wind and rain made it impossible to keep anything dry.
If anybody saw what it took to try and get all the saturated supplies back in Sylvia's vehicle, they might be a little more understanding. RPJ

Tamsen, your comment is a good point, and definitely we will use that strategy going forward, thanks.

I must say, I was amazed that some people still arrived at 6pm and stayed, the weather was shiite from about 550pm.

I'd have to agree with KD - it was very confusing details throughout. I had assumed being Bonfire Night that it would be at night. A posting here or an update to say it was called off for weather might have saved wasted trips for those that wanted a fire at night

It was a fun night despite the rain, where everyone was doing their best and chipping in help and to make the most of the weather! Thank you Sylvia, Amy and Heather for all your hard work. The food and hot drinks were fab and it was very well organized.

Only Brits would stand in the rain around a bonfire eating mince pies! Thank you SO much to everyone who pitched in to help. If it wasn't for the bleedin weather it would've been fantastic!

KD - please email me, Heather or Sylvia directly if you want to discuss details. There have been many emails sent in the past month giving information such as what time to be there. We gave up at 7pm because the weather was terrible. It was impossible to know at that point that it would dry up. We were all soaked to the skin, cold, battered by the wind and covered in sand. Sylvia especially worked tremendously hard the past week getting this event ready, it was not easy.

As the homeless person who attended your meet up, I want to say thank you for your food & warmth provided by your bon fire. As you may or may not know, life on the streets can be a cold, cruel world so it was nice to have a distraction from my vagrancy. I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

    1 · November 6, 2011

  • Diarmuid R.

I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" myself but that's because it's hard to have fun when it's freezing cold and raining heavily. Had the weather co-operated it would have been an excellent event. Tons of food, hot chocolate, tables, lights, guys, firewood had all been provided. I stayed about an hour until 7pm when people were drifting away for dryer places and Sylvia wisely called it off. It's too bad that we had 3 hours of torrential rain when the bonfire was supposed to be but that's life I guess.

    November 6, 2011

  • heather p.

Those complaining, Sylvia, Amy and I would appreciate that you address complaints/concerned to us by email rather than in these comments. We had a great turnout of more than 50 people from 4pm to 7pm, there was lots of great food prepared for us by Sylvia, and we burned 6 Guys. We finally had to leave as the weather was horrible, rain and terrible wind. Everyone chipped in to help pack it all up and we really appreciate that. Several of us went to the Pig and Whistle and laughed about it!

    November 6, 2011

  • Abigail

I was disappointed, but it was definitely the weathers fault. The organizers went to a lot of trouble and as the permit for the beach was paid for in advance it would be unfair to ask for a refund. Lets just hope the weather is better for this event next year!

ONE STAR - Guy Fawkes Bonfire NIGHT at Ocean Beach!! Where was the schedule for this event e.g.: 4pm to 7pm. If we had known we had to be there at 4pm, we would have not arrived at 6 pm-ish, **when Sylvia called it off** Also note, the photo was taken - before 7pm; no torrential rain!!

I did find it :) Thanks for everyone who organised this, the food was marvelous. We ended up bailing early after my son's shoe came off on the way to the bathrooms soaking his foot. After that he didn't want to go anywhere but home. I enjoyed meeting everyone. Hopefully I can make some of the future meet-ups. Thanks again.
