Cafechurch usually meets at 5pm on the first Sunday of each month at Costa Coffee in Southend High Street (on the corner of The Royals).
If we can bribe them, (a couple of cappuccinos usually does the trick), we have some musos kick the evening off with some live music. We then have a quiz which introduces the topic for the evening.
Subjects can be anything from environmental to spiritual and previous topics have included Is Britain becoming a more Violent Society?; Have we gone Recycling Mad?; Dealing with Debt; Does Prayer Work?; Coping with Stress; Being a Foster carer; Do Angels exist?
Some evenings we have no topic and just chill or we do something special such as Chocoholics Anonymous (which involved tonnes of chocolate taste testing) or Carols at Costa with Christmas songs old and new.
The winners of the quiz always receive a prize (ooohh!) and we then interview someone who is a kind of expert on the topic for about 5-10 minutes. After this we have an opportunity to discuss the subject over another coffee with others around our tables.
Another short interview might follow with someone who has a real life experience to share and we then wrap up the evening with some more music and plenty of time to grab a last drink before finishing up around 6.30-7.00pm.
The Southend cafechurch began in May 2008 and was the second to begin as part of the cafechurch network (www.cafechurch.net). It is hosted by members of Avenue Baptist Church (www.avenuebaptist.com).
You will enjoy this group if you want to meet new people of all ages and like discussing real life, relevant topics. It's a great way to meet people if you have just moved to Southend for uni or work.
If you are interested in spiritual things but not particularly interested in church you will also enjoy this group. You could call it church for those who don't do church!
Carols at Costa!
