Responsive Design and Dataviz: Charts That Work Everywhere
What's the best way to visualize a dataset? The answers largely rests on the data, but it's also important to consider the user's context. A great chart on a phone may not work well on a desktop screen (or in a print magazine). This talk will look at some of the design and technical considerations we've made for responsive-friendly dataviz at Harvard Business Review, using actual published D3.js projects.
Presenter: Tyler Machado (@tylermachado) is the editorial web developer at Harvard Business Review, working on interactive tools, data visualizations, and other intersection points between journalism and code. He is also a lifelong New Englander, soccer fan and supporter of DIY music scenes.
How to co-exist with ad blockers
There are reports that one in five web users have installed software to strip advertising from web pages. And who can blame them? We all have cursed at an unwanted and invasive ad one time or another. But what a content creator with ads on his/her pages to do? In this talk, I will look at trends and what hacks, tricks and tools are available.
Presenter: Daigo Fujiwara (@DaigoFuji) is a front-end web developer at WBUR-FM, Boston's NPR News Satation (wbur.org), and founder/organizer of Baseball Hack Day. He has previously worked at The Boston Globe, Harvard Business Review, Christian Science Monitor, Inc Magazine and Fast Company Magazine.
