Prof. Bortoletto will discuss what the Higgs boson is, the methods used to observe the new particle, what signals were seen, and what research remains to confirm whether scientists this summer actually discovered the Higgs boson. She is the Edward M. Purcell Distinguished Prof. of Physics at Purdue University and has been searching for the Higgs boson for over 10 years, first at the Fermilab Tevatron and now at the LHC. Prof. Bortoletto, a member of the CMS collaboration at the LHC, has made important to contributions to the construction of the CMS pixel detector. Andrew Olson is the coordinator of Cafe Inquiry.
