Cafe Inquiry--Thursday, December 9 (Dec. 16 in case of bad weather), 6:30 pm, Center for Inquiry Indiana, 350 Canal Walk, Suite A, Indianapolis. Prof. Caty Pilachowski presents "From the Big Bang to the Periodic Table - The Origin of Elements in the Universe.?
Dr. Pilachowski is a Professor in the Dept. of Astronomy at Indiana University, Bloomington. She will discuss how the Big Bang began a process of nucleosynthesis, the creation of the elements found in the periodic table, with the formation of hydrogen, helium, and lithium. In the last 13.7 billion years, the process of ucleosynthesis has continued in stars to fill in all of the remaining elements from beryllium up through the heaviest elements found in nature. Detailed studies of the composition of the Sun and stars provide the clues we need to understand where and how these elements have been produced, and to explain why some elements are abundant and others are rare.
