F# > C# - why F# is useful for things far beyond "exotic finance apps"

Presented by:

Aaron Erickson, Delivery Principal for ThoughtWorks

You have heard the arguments. When you get down to it, it is all IL, right? Doesn't that make C# and F# the same? Hogwash! In this talk, we will explore those areas where F# has distinct advantages over F#, including:

  • Immutability by default
  • Domain on a page
  • Pattern matching
  • Computation expressions
  • The eradication of null

Use what you learn from this talk to be able to, very confidently, make the case for F# to your friends, your colleagues, and greater "powers-that-be". Or at least understand why you should stop putting off that nagging "finally learn F#" to-do item that has been in the back of your head all these years.

RSVP before 11pm on Tuesday, May 22.  Security at the AON building is tight.  Bring a photo ID.  If you used your initials or a name different than that printed on your photo ID, send us a email with your firstname/lastname so you'll be on the list for security.  Enter the lobby through the south lower level entrance.  We will have someone there to help get you through security.

Aaron was a great speaker and did a great job of defining the key points of why F# can be more valuable than C#. Being completely new to F#, it was nice to see some sample code run as this always helps us become more comfortable with a new language. I was hoping to see an example of some awesome application that had been written entirely in F#, but we didn't get that far.
