The Chicago Sci-Fi/Fantasy Meetup Group Pages

***** NOTE:, in their infinite wisdom, has removed the Maybe option from all new events. If you are interested in attending an event, but you are not sure you can make it, please RSVP Yes and put Maybe in the comment. Thanks! *****

Our meetup group has been going strong since 2003! We are an extremely fluid & eclectic group of folks who are into all aspects of Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom including books, movies, TV, gaming and conventions. Some are deeply into one or two shows, genres, authors, etc. and some have vast and varied interests. You are welcome if you've just discovered your first geeky interest or if you have been steeped in fandom your entire life.

"Official" Organizers:
My name is Nina (UrbanFirefly). I have been part of this group since the beginning of 2006 and took over as the listed organizer when our former organizer & her hubby moved away, though the group's driving force and chief geek-herder since the beginning has been Barry (oneleggedman). I had previously stepped up as the meetup organizer for the Chicagoland Browncoats when Keith decided to step down. I do my best to help consolidate the various online presences of the Browncoats with the Chicagoland Browncoat Meetup Group, and am working toward the same, but much larger goal with general Science Fiction! Some events are listed both here and the Browncoat meetup, but not all, so please feel free to join both! The pictures I generally use are of Suki. She loves going to Cons and seeing all of her friends, and always gets in the spirit. You can see some of her other outfits and even a couple of me if you click on her picture there on the left. You can also email me directly with the link there if you have any questions that you don't want to post to the message board.

Barry (oneleggedman) is our original founder and our Chief Geek herder. None of us would be here if it wasn't for his effort. Beware - he really does know all!

Ben is definitely the stealthy one. It may take awhile before you even meet him, but he works his mojo with our group in many mysterious and wonderful ways.

Julian Rodriguez is one of our newest brave ones stepping into the role of assisting. He & I met at our Paranormal Activity screening while I was running around like mad trying to hunt up members out of a three block long line! It worked well and was an awesome outing. Julian has fast become an integral part of our group. He's funny, charming and geeky. I'm sure he'll come up with lots of interesting events.

Leane has been a member of this meetup group since the very early days as well, and is involved closely in local fandom - not the least of which was being the Con Chair for Capricon 2008 ~ Pirates! I have nothing but respect for those that take on the task of being a Con Chair. Besides, Leane just rocks in general. She is a major part of the fabric that weaves us together. She has taken over most of the major planning of our events and is more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Rob Jacob joined early in 2009 and kept having so many ideas for meetups that he became an Assistant in short order. He does a fantastic job of greeting and organizing and coming up with great events. This last year has been a challenging one for me and several long-term members of this group and Rob has been highly instrumental in the strength of our community.

Former organizers who had to step down for various reasons: (I didn't want to not mention them!)
Nate Scheidler has been a member of our group since close to it's inception, though he is generally busy with his own extremely active boardgame and RPG meetup groups. He is an organizer without parallel. I have no idea how he keeps up his pace, humor, the rules to literally thousands of games, and wrangles a great deal of cool swag and giveaways in the process. You'll always see him at our Mashups, and if we're lucky, a few other times as well.
Unfortunately, Nate has moved out of state and won't be around anymore, unless he's visiting the city.

Rachel is one of the Co-Founders of the Chicago Nerd Social Club and she is very passionate about getting like-minded people together to have fun. Among other wonderful events, they are the bringers of Nerd-O-Ween! Look forward to lots of new and exciting nerdy events in our future!

Trudy Seabrook joined this group in 2009 and has been a wonderful font of knowledge on all things movie related as well as many other wonderfully geeky things. She recently volunteered to help out with organizing events and I can't wait to see what she comes up with.

There are a lot of other interesting and fun members, and we always have at least a few newbies at most events, so don't be shy. We were all there at one time! Feel free to start a discussion here on the message board, ask questions, or even decide you want to host an event or put out a call for a movie outing or other expedition. Fair warning - wherever we go and no matter what the main plan is, it has a tendency to evolve into something that involves food. Of course, we think that's a good thing!

Our 'geeky' interests are far-ranging, and you will very likely find someone in this group who shares yours, so always introduce yourself to someone new. Closet geeks and nerds, their friends and loved ones are also quite welcome! Our First Tuesday monthly dinner meetups have been going strong every month since Barry (Oneleggedman) took the reigns in July of 2003. We meet on the first Tuesday at 7:30 every month unless it conflicts with a major holiday such as New Years or 4th of July, then we move to the 2nd Tuesday. We like to mix around the location from time to time, so be sure to check the emails and Calendar.

We often share or trade books, have lively discussions, and get together for all sorts of activities. Many friendships and more have developed over the years, and we love it when our family grows. If you have ideas or hear information about an event, book signing, etc. please post them on the message board, email the group list, post it as an Idea on meetup, or contact one of us organizers! If you want to host an event let me know. If you are fun and active you may just get elevated to Asst. Organizer status! It's all about community.

If we have anything close to a motto for events it would be "Have fun, pay your tab, and don't leave behind a mess*"!

We love 'em! Take them! Post them! Comment on them! Share them!
The Photos section of meetup used to be extremely limited, so we created our Chicago Sci/Fi Group Photo Albums on shutterfly. Sign up there too to get notified whenever now pics get posted, which tends to be infrequently and in large batches. The system here on Meetup is much improved and I'm slowly working on adding pics to past meetups, but Shutterfly still has some advantages, not the least of which is to download full-sized images for those times when you really need to plaster a picture of yourself in a crazy outfit onto the side of a bus!

We often have goodies or swag, especially at our First Tuesday meetups. Please feel free to bring books, swag, or other goodies that you want to share if you think others in the group might be able to use or enjoy them; just keep in mind that everything has to go at the end of the night, so if it doesn't find another home (which it generally does), then you are responsible for finding it one or taking it back out with you. Our venues take care of us very well, and we don't want to abuse our privileges.

See you all at a gathering soon!

*Barry's rules. You must obey!
