Media Handling in Drupal

Images, Video, and Flash, oh my!

Drupal's double-edged sword is that there are usually many ways to do the same thing. This diversity of options leaves the landscape rich with possibilities, but also steepens the learning curve, adding complexity to figuring out the "best" way to do something and to just "getting it done."

Media handling is an area where this holds especially true.

From embedding images in a blog post to cataloging video, we'll discuss common use cases for incorporating various types of media on your site, several of the available solutions for doing so, and where things are headed for media in Drupal.

Stephen Piscura will be presenting.

Amen. I'd be grateful for any artifacts of what I'm sure was a great presentation. Still bummed I had to miss it.

Stephen: Thanks for offering this. #1 would certainly be appreciated and very likely helpful to many.

    I'm thinking about posting...

    1. a list of all necessary modules to create some of the use cases i spoke about in my presentation

    2. two SQL dumps (D6 and D7) which would include these use cases already configured

This way, anyone interested could get into the content types, fields, views, feeds and so on and see more closely how they work and how they could be of use to your own projects.

But i'll only take the time to do so if ye all think it'd be of benefit. So...any thoughts?

re:hardy funk's post-meetup comment question point (2) - In that case, your home PC is acting as a server. The files would have to be made available via http unless the module includes support for something like scp, ftp, or webDAV. Drupal will be able to handle an IP address instead of a domain name.

Very timely topic - I need to bring video into a new site I'm working on.
Two questions came to mind afterwards:
    1) What are the legal restrictions to using media from other sites versus UTube?
    2) Can the new Media (such as pictures) be resident on our home PC instead of having to put it onto a server (like Flickr)? Can Drupal media handle this (using your IP address and folder location) or does it have to be on a server?

Stephen gave an excellent presentation. It's awesome how simple the Media module makes handling remote resources like they were images/videos stored on a local server...

Steve presented the new Media module in Drupal 7 very well. The dialogue which was created between the group and Steve provided very specific information that I will find usable immediately. Also the contrast and comparison between this new module and the suggested Drupal 6 modules to mimic it's functions was a great idea, many of us are either developing or inheriting Drupal 6 sites.
A new Drupalist, Adam, came to this Meetup and added a lot to our discussion.
    Definitely a good time!

I've scheduled this for the second Saturday because Steve's not available on the 6th.

I'm really looking forward to this. I haven't moved past emfield into the world of the Media module...

Great topic. Would love to see the changes from 6 to 7 discussed along with suggestions on how to keep things most forward compatible if possible.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
