Choosing the Right Mix of Technologies - A Real World Example

Abstract:

Java, Ruby, Python, oh my! Today, more than ever before, application architects have a plethora of web application frameworks to choose from. So, which do they choose? Is there one that typically prevails? The right tool for the job, right? Ok - but what are some of the criteria used to decide which Frameworks? Add cloud computing to the mix, and the decision becomes even more challenging. Further complicate things by adding mobile to the mix. What about databases? You still need those too - but do you go the traditional RDBMS route (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.), or blaze a trail by opting to use a no-sql database (such as Cassandra, CouchDB, or MongoDB). Technology road-mapping becomes a crucial activity since re-writing software is a very expensive proposition ... and can even wipe out a small IT company, due to limited resources (i.e. time and money). So, the application architects had better get it right the first time. Having been an Enterprise Architect at PNC for 2 years, Aki has learned a lot and has implemented some of those experiences and insights into his decision making process for his start-ups. While no one method can assure a company's success, or prevent defeat, you still need a process to have a fighting chance at selecting the right mix of technologies from the myriad choices that exist today. Aki Iskandar has been interested in computers, and programming them, since the age of 14 - when his Father brought an Apple IIe home. Closely related to computer software, is the field of Artificial Intelligence - in which Aki maintained an interest after having watched the movie War Games, in 1983. To this day, his fascination in AI remains and he thus founded the NE Ohio Artificial Intelligence Group. Having been an IT consultant for the past 14 years, he's had the opportunity to have worked for two of the world's largest software companies, Compuware and Microsoft, and for some the country's largest financial institutions, such as PNC and Bank of America. However, being an entrepreneur at heart, he's recently left the corporate world to grow his own companies - serving as President for WorthyGoals.com, LLC (soon to be launched), and as President for Lambda Software, LLC (currently consults customers on implementing TCO reduction strategies).
