Blancanieves - Cedar Lee Theatre / Pacific East Japanese Restaurant

*** Time will be 7:05 ***

BLANCANIEVES

Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

Set in 1920’s Spain, this silent film tribute beautifully retells the Snow White story for adults backed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's emotional scoring. Spain’s entry for Best Foreign Film for the 2012 Academy Awards.

"It is a full-bodied, visually stunning silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of the Evil Stepmother could have been slipped past the censors." -Roger Ebert

Very interesting. Look into the original Grimm and pre-Grimm Snow White some time... with pleasant little details such as the queen being her evil mother and not a stepmother, and planning to eat Snow White's organs. And in the end, being tortured to death at Snow White's orders by being forced to dance in red hot iron shoes until death. Who thinks of this stuff? Children's authors aren't what they used to be.

since I just couldn't believe her real mother would treat snow white that way I also looked it up. On wiki it says her mother died and her father remarried. the new queen asks the mirror who is the fairest and it was the queen until snow white turned seven. This is where the film also picked up the story with the first communion. Then the article goes on to say that in the first grimm version it was her mother. Eventually they switched it to a stepmother to tone it down for the kids. It is amazing to me that all this grimm stuff was written for kids. They are pretty darn scary.

Strange, beautiful, very Spanish, very Almodovar--definitely a movie to experience. Fun evening--thanks, Drew for organizing.

Have to cancel. I'm either sneezy or drowsy. Thought the allergies would wane from this a.m. They won't.

First time with this group and I don't want to mess up. I should meet everyone in the lobby at 7 PM with the movie scheduled for 7:20. We will eat at the Japanese restaurant after the movie, not before (late rather than early dinner). Have I got it right?

Looks like dinner is after, yes--but the movie starts at 7:05. I for one plan to get my ticket long before 7pm. I haven't been active in this group for a long time, but I recall usually meeting people after the movie, not before.

Sorry, film is at 7:05. 7:20 was a guesstimate before they slotted the film. Dinner will be after the film at Pacific East.

Drew - don't look for me in the lobby. My OCD will cause me to get there early and get my favorite seat. See you after the movie.

From the Cohen Group's (distributor) public relations representative: "Regarding the online discussions you mentioned below, PETA, The Humane Society of the United States, and The Humane Society International have accepted documentation from the producers stating that no bulls were hurt during the filming as fact.

      I hope this helps.

      Best,

Movie will begin at 7:05. A sellout is not outside the realm of possibility.
