Re: [humanism-174] "You're an atheist?! Never met one before..."

I was overheard by a black coworker while talking to a white coworker.
He heard me use the words "black slavery" and Puritans. He's a bit pridefulof his heritage and has mentioned growing up reading the bible.
It's fun and we're coworkers, so sometimes, even though I'm not a believer, I'll point out that we all have biblical names (Matthiew, Mark John, Jordan etc)
When he asked "Did I hear you say something about black people?" In a wtf sort of way, I said "yeah" I have an issue with the Puritans story. You know, the people who were kicked out of England for being too religious. They 'fled persecution' and called themselves 'pure'itans and weren't they the same people who took your ancestors to build this society? The same people who spread the religion you support are the ones who enslaved and slaughtered 'our' ancestors. (I'm part native American so we could relate)
I thoroughly enjoyed pointing out to a black American Christian that slave owners taught him about Jesus.
I saw the look of thought in his eyes after that and he's kind of buddy buddy with me now.

Anyone else ever get that one? A writer from Freethought Arizona relates his story here-

I've gotten that a few times- the most recent was from a nice person I met at an animal welfare event. Had a nice conversation, but I guess I went too far; after saying the "lone atheist commandment" was "Don't be an Asshole" (which the person thought was amusing), I launched into my questioning as to why God is portrayed as a male figure. "Does it have testicles?"

Apparently that was one too far, because the person said I wasn't following the "lone commandment". I smoothed it over somewhat but overall the conversation ended sort of badly.
