In ancient times there were no professional armies like those we are familiar with today. Pay was based on loot and pillage. What was unique and truly obscene was the Hebrew claim that they were committing atrocities at the command of God.

Just like the religious "specials" before Christmas, this is just an attempt to
capitalize generally increased religious sentiments in the weeks before Easter.
Of course it will be a sanitized version of the Bible. Do you think there's any
chance they'll show little children and babies getting their heads lopped off
while the Israelites obey God's command to slaughter every man, woman, child and
animal among the Canaanites, Midianites, etc. It makes me sick when I read the
lame attempts of apologists and pastors to excuse these things (ranging from
"anything God does has to be right and loving by definition" to ""it's a
mystery" to "it was a different time" -- while in the next breath saying God
never changes). I sometimes ask people making such arguments, if YOU were in the
Israel army, would you obey such commands--even hacking up little babies, and
assume you were doing God's will? They'll usually squirm, but most won't give a
straight answer. Those
who say "yes" (and some will) scare me. After all, it's essentially the same
mentality of those that strap bombs to their bodies in restaurants or slammed
jets into the World Trade Center.
