Dynamic AWS cloud deployment, monitoring and optimization

  • April 3, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Cloud management and monitoring includes a broad set of tools that help cloud managers to keep track of their deployment health, utilization, consumption and cost.

The meetup will cover techniques and best practices for efficient cloud deployment, specifically: how to implement capacity, utilization and cost metrics in your AWS cloud deployment in order to maximize the ROI.

Sessions will be led by Scalr, SalesForce and Cloudyn and include best practices from customers on how to optimize cloud resource usage.

Session: Leveraging the cloud, getting the most bang for your buck

SalesForce, Nate Lindstrom, Director of Network Operations

Thanks Sebastien for trying to stream.

The second speaker was relatively clear, the main speaker though has too much echo. The videocamera is also too far from the presentation screen. If you can't stream straight off the laptop used for the presentation, always set up the videocamera so that the presentation slides fill screen.

    2 · April 3, 2013

    • Chris W.

Or, post the slides so we can follow along directly.

      April 4, 2013

    • Rob N.

Thanks Sebastien. It did improve the visual clarity.

Really interesting presentations -- it's always nice to see how other people solve scaling problems.

Informative meetup - thanks for setting it up and for the folks giving the talks!

The audio is so bad I had to drop out. If I'd known it would be so bad I'd have gone in person. But it's too late now.

In future guys, if you have a hard capacity limit, set it on the Meetup. And if you need people to drop/confirm RSVPs, then email several reminders.

    1 · April 3, 2013

    • Sebastian

That would only lead to people complaining about the massive emails.

      April 3, 2013

    • Stephen

No it wouldn't. It's very standard Meetup etiquette. If the capacity limit had been set to 140, then you'd only need at most 40 drops, and a couple of emails. Thanks though Sebastian for putting this event on and trying to stream it.

It is possible to understand the second featured speaker and he has nice large fonts. Camera's resolution is the thin point now. Thank you Sebastian for doing your best.

      Thanks for being patient!

    Please zoom in

    April 3, 2013

    • Sebastian

Are things better now re: zoom?

      April 3, 2013

    • Sergey K.

Not good enough. I can read only the headlines if they are present. Probably would be better if slides fill the screen completely.

      April 3, 2013

  • Kumar P.

Please post a link to the slides if possible . Dropping off for now as really cannot follow the talk.

    April 3, 2013

  • Sergey K.

I am dropping off as well. Waste of time due to both audio and video

    April 3, 2013

    • Sebastian

This is indeed by I don't like doing streaming; it's hard to get right, so viewers get easily disgruntled.

      April 3, 2013

  • Vittaly T.

The audio is not too clear, but now that there's a general silence it's better. The slides are barely readable.

    1 · April 3, 2013

    • Sebastian

      Is there any echo?

      April 3, 2013

    • Sergey K.

For the first feature speaker - yes. It wasn't there before. I'd suggest somebody from the broadcasting crew actually try to watch and listen on a laptop with headphones. not that i want their feeling hurt ;)

      1 · April 3, 2013

  • Sergey K.

Now, when an actual speaker started, it is a bit better. Probably he is wearing the mic in a better way. The question is, was there a change in agenda? Does not sound like "Leveraging the cloud, getting the most bang for your buck", or "Cloud optimization"

    April 3, 2013

    • Sebastian

No change in agenda; you might have been referring to the lightning talks.

      April 3, 2013

    • Sergey K.

I've realized this. But it was impossible to discern anything from audio at the beginning

      April 3, 2013

  • Sergey K.

I think that mic is meant to be attached at the shirt pocket level, not to the shirt collar

    April 3, 2013

    • Vittaly T.

I'd say this mike was meant to be replaced :)

      April 3, 2013

    • Sergey K.

They did and while there was no mike it was actually better. Now it is worse that it was originally: looks like that mike is mixing pretty badly with another one

      April 3, 2013

  • Roland P.

Will the slides be available for download?

    1 · April 3, 2013

  • Sergey K.

If the slides fill the screen, they would be mostly readable

    April 3, 2013

  • Var

Audio is bad, can you please fix it?

    April 3, 2013

  • John C.

personally I'm ok with the bad audio because I'm not listening :) It's an awesome topic but not directly related to what I currently use. Also, I figure if it were important enough, I'd make time to show up in person and RSVP earlier.

    April 3, 2013

  • Jayram A D.

Sound quality is making it unable to understand . The topic is awesome, wish we had a better sound !

    April 3, 2013

  • Dan F.

    i agree, can't understand it

    April 3, 2013

  • Rob N.

Audio is really bad. I should have attended in person.

    April 3, 2013

  • Stephen

SOUND QUALITY IS TERRIBLE - can't make out a damn word :(

    April 3, 2013

  • Kumar P.

anybody else finding the audio a bit inaudible?

    April 3, 2013

  • Sergey K.

Unless people speak to the mic, it is impossible to hear the audio

    April 3, 2013

Apparently, there's a 100 person hard limit; I'm hoping that, as usual, most RSVPs are bogus, and am looking forward to meeting people in person.

Just a little info about parking and entry. We recommend parking in one of the three city lots (marked below in red): Bryant and Villa St. Deck, Bryant and California St. Deck or the Franklin and Villa gravel lot. Please enter on the Bryant side.
