IaaS Series - Eucalyptus

Introducing... The IaaS series! Where every evening this week we present awesome infrastructure cloud software.

Tonight we are privileged to host the Eucalyptus Team. Eucalyptus implements on-premise clouds using scalable open source web services (the same technologies used to build large-scale commercial Internet-facing services).

Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus will start by discussing the importance of open APIs. Rich Wolski, CTO of Eucalyptus continues with the architectural features of and the implementation internals in the current generation -- generation 3 -- of the Eucalyptus platform. In particular, Eucalyptus 3 adds HA, identity management, and persistent instance capabilities as core functionality. We will discuss the design tradeoffs that were necessary to consider in the development of Eucalyptus in general, and Eucalyptus 3 in particular with respect to infrastructure portability (including multi-hypervisor support and network configuration neutrality) and high-fidelity support for the AWS API. We will also discuss future technical directions for the technology and for the private cloud ecosystem.
