Turn your cluster into a Cloud with Nimbus

Sheppard Mullin (map)

Selected By: Sebastian

The meetup is full, but if you are absolutely dying to come, just show up, as we can always squeeze in one or two extra.

Computing superstar, Nimbus Project Lead, and Fellow Kate Keahey will present this session:

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing is emerging as a viable alternative to the acquisition and management of physical resources. What problems does it solve and how? What new capabilities will it require? How will it reshape our world? Has computing become a commodity yet?

In this talk, Kate will give an overview of cloud computing in the context of Nimbus -- a toolkit developed in the context of scientific applications that provides an open source, EC2-compatible IaaS implementation as well as "cloud ecosystem" tools that allow users to combine resources drawn from different clouds. She will describe how scientific applications drove the development of various Nimbus components and how they use these capabilities today on Amazon EC2 and in the Science Clouds. Finally, she will discuss the emerging trends in cloud computing, discuss standards, and the creation of a cloud computing marketplace.

Law firm Sheppard Mullin has graciously offered pizza and drinks as well as the venue for this meetup.
