JavaScript Study Group: How to Learn JavaScript Properly Roadmap (Week 3 and 4)

This study group is for folks who want to learn and/or get better at writing JavaScript. Whether you're a budding novice or an experienced developer we welcome you.

The curriculum for this group is Richard Bovell's 6-8 week roadmap "How to Learn JavaScript Properly." Members can work at their own pace, pair program or partner with others on projects based on the topic of the week.

We will meet every week to work on and discuss the lessons. Also, some weeks we'll have a guest speaker to cover the topic of the week.

Below is this week's topic:

Week 3 and 4: Objects, Arrays, Functions, DOM, jQuery (Please see roadmap for more info)

About: Richard Bovell

Richard Bovell is a front-end engineer and UI designer. While Richard has a computer science degree, everything he has learned about modern web application development and mobile app development is self-taught and is attributed to great programming books and free online programming resources—blogs, tutorials, open source libraries and frameworks, and the like. And for this reason, Richard is giving back with this blog.

to someone like myself - who should have learnt programming many moons ago but was more interested in playing games - now I have to learn the bloody code - to say a road map of 8 weeks is not really on. It takes several years to get there.

Same here. About the rest of your comments, I guess it depends on your objectives and desires. If you want to be able to just manipulate the browser it gets shorter. But if you want to be able to make games or even more compexive tasks, yes of course you need some years of coding or your back.
So I guess the 8 week roadmap is to cover the basics and go a bit (or more than just a bit) further just enough to be able to take the grasp of Javascript and know what your options are.
Maybe other people who know the paths better may be able to correct me. I m still in the beginning.

    Hi All,

I wanted to know about some sort of project or a problem where I could practise core JavaScript's concepts.
Just book and plain programming is not helping. A sort of project idea incorporating all the concepts of core JavaScript would be really helpful to boost learning.

    Thanks in Advance.
