New Almaden Quicksilver Mine and Museum Photowalk and Scavenger Hunt

Let's explore the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum:

I'll bring a scavenger hunt list, just like all our Photowalks. If you are new to this, I'll give you a list of ten items to look for and photograph. After the event, we upload our photos to the meetup site. It's fun to see how people interpret the list, and to see what you were able to find!

How to Get There

The Casa Grande and the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum are located at 21350 Almaden Road. The Casa Grande is the impressive white building with picket fencing just past the Post Office. The Club Almaden sign is still up on the large redwood tree at the entrance.

From Highway 85 take the Almaden Expressway exit south 4.5 miles to Almaden Road. Turn right and proceed 2.5 miles west to the town of New Almaden. The Casa Grande will be on your left.

From Highway 880 take 101 south to 280 north (toward San Francisco). Exit 280 at Hwy. 87 (Guadalupe Parkway) south. Exit Hwy. 87 at Almaden Expressway south (to the right). Proceed about 8 miles to Almaden Road. Turn right and proceed 2.5 miles to the town of New Almaden.

No Fee to Enter the Museum

There is a gift shop, but I am not sure about food, so bring your own water, just in case.

Very nice and great new experience. Lovely little town with people so friendly they come out of their circa 1800's houses to great you. Loved the Casa Grande tour and the special introduction by "jack" John Campbell.

Another fun outing with some regular photowalkers and some new ones, too. We started at Casa Grande and walked through the New Almaden historic district, where we met some delightful people, saw historic miner's houses and an old historic church. We saw vintage mining equipment and learned about how quicksilver (mercury) was discovered 27 months before the Gold Rush here in northern CA. The quicksilver was used in the gold and silver mining process, and was used to create munitions in the Civil War. We ended the event back at Casa Grande, where were got a tour from the docents and the delightful 84 year-old author of a book on the mining in the area. What a delightful day - thanks to all who made the effort to be there.

Charrice, I'm suffering with them, as well. I'll bring extra Puffs in case you decide to come. I've been home bound for two weeks because of allergies. I need to get out!!!

The few times that I have been to Casa Grande, there has not been food at the gift shop. Since I live in Almaden Valley, I will make a few suggestions on places to pick up food on the way out there. At Camden and Almaden Expwy, there is a shopping center with a Safeway, Starbucks, Posh Bagel, plus a donut shop and a Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast burritos. Also, at Blossom Hill and Almaden Expwy, there is a Whole Foods and Peets. Cheers.
