Introduction to Crewing on a Sailboat. A Course for Beginner Sailors

This is event is for CSA members only with paid memberships.

In recognition of the fact that many new members are novice sailors and many existing members are not familiar with all the skipper’s boats, CSA is offering a day with a skipper or 2 in which members can be introduced to basic sailing techniques and also become more familiar with the skipper’s boats and the parts of a sailboat, in general. The objective of the learning sessions will be to teach CSA members how to be an effective crew member. This learning session will be held at the White Rocks Marina where Hal and Albert Boyce will have their boats at the end of one of the piers. The first part of the session will be conducted on a boat while it’s at dock with the skipper explaining the parts of a boat and how to use and operate each part. They will also explain what the crew is expected to do during each of the sailing maneuvers (tacking , jibing, docking, etc.) and how to do each job. After the first part of a session, there will be a break for lunch at Mike's Crab House located next to the Marina and then the second part of the session will be conducted while sailing on the water with the skipper and crew practicing all the techniques they learned in the first part of the session.

So come out for a day of sailing that will combine learning about sailing, a social (everyone will eat lunch together at Mike's Crab House) and a day on the water. There is no charge for the course. It is being offered by the generosity of the skippers  interested in helping beginning sailors become comfortable with sailing.

The event turned out great after some apprehension about the rain from Tropical Storm Andrea. Al brought his boat and crew down from the Inner Harbor and arrived right on schedule. (Thanks go to his crew for sacrificing their Saturday morning sleep time to arrive at his boat early!) We had a great lunch at Mike's Crabhouse restaurant at the marina. Afterward, we went sailing for a few hours and the crew performed all the maneuvers we had discussed earlier in the day, even though the winds were very light. All in all a very successful event!

    Hal is the most patient
instructor I've ever met. Great sail, great lunch, fantastic people! Thanks to Al and Hal for their generosity and friendship.

Thank you for the compliment ... you were great crew ... wish we had more wind but at least we didn't get rained on!

This was my first sail with CSA. The crew was great and I am looking forward to more sailing with CSA this year.

Sailing today was one of those perfect days you never forget. I learned a lot, steered the boat all the way to our destination, and met several great people. Thank you for making this possible.

I appreciated sailing from Baltimore to White Rocks. We learned things as we sailed down to Pasadena that were reinforced there. We also learned many new things at W.R.

    Will another training be offered?

Yes, we plan to offer more throughout the summer. We'll try to have enough of them that all who wish to attend will have a chance.

Mary, that's great. Let's plan to meet at 7:30 at the Anchorage Marina on Boston Street in Canton. That will give us plenty of time to get to White Rocks for the instruction. The marina parking requires a parking pass, but street parking is usually available that early on a Saturday. We can work out the details later next week.

If anyone is interested in helping me sail/motor from Canton in the city to White Rocks (about 2 hrs ) for this event let me know. I will probably be leaving from the Anchorage marina around 7:30 or 8 am. I will also be returning afterwards and could use some crew to assist.
