MAIN TOPIC ABSTRACT
Developing Applications for the Windows Phone 7.5

Windows Phone 7 is a major shift in the way developers design, develop, and sell mobile apps for Windows powered devices. Windows Phone 7.5 (a.k.a. Mango) is the second release of the mobile operating system and includes new APIs with support for background agents, a built in database engine, and direct access to the camera, compass, and gyroscope.

Using free (as in beer) developer tools from Microsoft, this session will demonstrate how to build applications and games for the Windows Phone including writing code to dial the phone, composing emails, sending text messages and working with the phone's sensors and hardware. We will discuss how to build an application to work with the phone's Fast Application Switching lifecycle model and how background agents perform work when the application is not running.

BASIC CONCEPTS ABSTRACT
Software Patents

Software patents have been an important issue in the open source
community for decades. While surveys indicate that over 80% of software developers believe patents hurt innovation more than they help, patents continue to grow stronger, and patent portfolios larger. This presentation will explain the problems with software patents, look at
the ways they are affecting today's technology industry and open source
software in particular, and end with concrete steps that can be taken to
address this problem.
